Pregnancy Heartburn

At some point, almost everybody gets heartburn – that uncomfortable sensation in your chest, the bitter taste in your mouth. Pregnancy heartburn is all too common – most women will experience it at least once during their pregnancy.

Dietary changes are a good way to reduce pregnancy heartburn. Good eating habits include eating more fiber, less fat and sugar, and eliminating all processed foods, caffeine, and alcohol. Those changes should eliminate many heartburn incidents.

Talk to your health care provider about which medications are appropriate to treat pregnancy heartburn. Just because a medication is offered without a prescription, does not mean it is safe to take during pregnancy.

If pregnancy heartburn is keeping you awake at night, try raising the head of the bed to keep stomach acid down where it belongs, in the stomach. You can also try raising the head of your mattress 4 to 8 inches by placing blocks underneath.
