Low Sperm Count

Having a low sperm count, also called oligospermia is one cause of male infertility.

Ways to increase your sperm count include: exercising regularly, eating nutritious food that’s low in fat, and high in protein, vegetables, and whole grains. Reduce alcohol affects your liver function, which, in turn, causes a dramatic rise in estrogen levels. Even two drinks a day will have long-term effects on sperm production.

A low sperm count may be genetic or can be caused by a number of different factors, including:

  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol intake
  • Over exertion physically and mentally
  • Zinc deficiency
  • Anabolic steroid use

Having a low sperm count does not mean that it will be impossible to father a child; it just means that it may take a little extra assistance. It might be beneficial to consult a reproductive urologist, medical specialist with expertise in working with men with a low sperm count.
