Fertility Clinics

Fertility clinics are medical facilities dedicated to helping couples and women who want to become parents but can’t for a variety of reasons.   Every clinic is bound by established ethics, but treatment options as well as procedures can vary in small ways from one to the next.

Trying to choose between which clinic to attend can be a difficult and exhausting process, but the importance in finding the right clinic can not be understated.  Dr. Arthur Wisot, executive director of Reproductive Partners Medical Group in Southern California, has co-authored two books on infertility and is a clinical professor at the UCLA School of Medicine.

According to Dr. Wisot, you should call various clinics and ask about issues including:

  • The clinic’s employee turnover rate involving the medical director, doctors, and all staff.  High turnover may be indicative of internal problems;
  • Which procedures they perform; preferably they perform a wide range and utilize the latest technologies;
  • Whether they have a female age limit.  A ‘yes’ is the desirable answer, since it speaks directly to the ethical nature of the clinic;
  • All costs involved.  Be cautious of clinics that offer money-back guarantees should you not become pregnant, since the doctor may regard this as an incentive and want to apply aggressive treatments.

You can also check a national database at the web site for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Every few years they publish a report on the success rates of fertility clinics nationwide
