In vitro fertilization is clearly an option for these women. The concerns for a single woman are much different than for a married woman. Finding a good, competent and supportive doctor or fertility clinic is most important. Also finding a clinic that has the types of services you are looking for. Honesty and clarity is important. Let everyone know, when appropriate, that you are a single mom and there won’t be a father present during the process. You can always call ahead, do research and find out if the clinic is supportive of single women. Discrimination may have been an issue in the past, but not so much any more. You will be a paying client not unlike any other. If you do feel discriminated against there aren’t a lot of laws you can look to so it’s best to find a clinic that will openly and freely support your pregnancy. When considering using IVF, as a single parent, think through the entire process and make sure your personal support systems are in place. Families and friends need to be involved so they can help when you need it. Think about financial concerns since you will be the sole support for a baby. Daycare, nannies, tutors are all expensive and necessary for a working single mom. You also need to think about how you will answer questions about paternity – for the people around you and also for your children.
