Donor insemination is an

Donor insemination is an appropriate choice for someone who either does not have a male partner or for someone whose male partner does not have healthy enough sperm to facilitate a pregnancy.

Using a known donor can be tricky for a couple of reasons. First, you will still want him to undergo a complete physical and health history, which can be awkward. Plus, you will want to have a legally binding document in place that clearly identifies the sperm donor's role, if any, should a pregnancy occur.

The advantages of using a known donor are several as well. If the child wishes to meet the donor as he or she becomes an adult, then the process will likely be easier. In the same way, if there is a physical problem, having someone available for a complete familial history may be handy.
