Some doctors will hand you a prescription for six months or even a year of Clomid and tell you to come back if you're not pregnant. If you have PCOS, Clomid may be a useful tool, but it doesn't work best on it's own.

First, you still have to get the timing of intercourse right for Clomid to work. You should be charting your ovulation, or using other methods to make sure you know when you ovulate. A mid-cycle ultrasound scan can be useful, along with an inexpensive hCG shot to trigger ovulation.

Metformin, or glucophage is commonly prescribed with Clomid if you have PCOS. It isn't a guarantee, by any means, but it does often do the trick - though rarely in the first month. If you don't have glucophage, go back to your doctor and ask for it - or why you're not a good candidate. It's cheap (less than $10 at Wal-mart) and works well.
