GIVF opens egg banking service

Genetics & IVF Institute is opening a Personal Egg Banking service out of its Washington DC location. This center will provide elective oocyte cryopreservation to women 40 and under who want to preserve their eggs for future, personal use.

“Many patients with age-related infertility are very distressed because they did not fully understand how difficult it would be to conceive at an older age,” says Dr. Lawrence Udoff, reproductive endocrinologist. “Some of these women weren’t ready to have a child when they were younger because they had to found a partner or they were immersed in their careers. Now that they are ready, they are facing age-related infertility.”

“Experience so far with frozen eggs predicts that a patient in her 40s would significantly improve her chances of a successful pregnancy if she were to use eggs that were frozen when she was in her 20s or 30s,” continued Dr. Udoff.

When a woman who has had her eggs banked is ready to become pregnant, the eggs are thawed and through in vitro fertilization combined with sperm. The resulting embryo is implanted to achieve pregnancy.

While cryopreservation centers can be found in most cities, GIVF is world-renowned for its pioneering work in infertility and genetics. Doctors and researchers there developed or perfected many of the treatments and techniques used today in other centers. They have a record of over 500 peer-reviewed original medical articles and abstracts. Worldwide, GIVF is responsible for over 20,000 IVF pregnancies.
