Nuts for sperm health

Healthy young men may increase their sperm health by eating a small packet of walnuts every day.

Improved vitality, motility and structure

A study shows that when health American men in their 20s and 30s ate a packet of walnuts daily they were able to increase the vitality, motility and structure of their sperm compared to those men who did not eat walnuts. That’s the trifecta of healthy sperm.

About 10% of all couples struggle with infertility. About half of those cases are related to sperm health. There are a number of reasons why this occurs in industrialized societies including pollution, unhealthy lifestyles, and the Western diet. For some couples, the answer cannot be found.

Just a packet a day

“We tested the hypothesis that 75gm of whole-shelled walnuts per day added to a Western-style diet of healthy young men would beneficially affect semen quality,” said first author Wendie Robbins, University of California, Los Angeles.

Walnuts are loaded with polyunsaturated fatty acids which aid maturing sperm and preserve the integrity of the membrane around the cell which helps with fertilization of the egg. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are also found in cold water fish, fish oil supplements, and flax seeds. Additionally, walnuts are a natural plant source for omega-3.

Also fewer chromosomal abnormalities

After testing volunteers over 12 weeks of eating walnuts, they found improvements in sperm quality in every category. They also found fewer chromosomal abnormalities.

“Findings demonstrated that walnuts added to a Western-style diet improved sperm vitality, motility and morphology,” state the report. It may be important to note that the research did not include men with known fertility disorders.
