Two year old and newborns are quadruplets

This doesn’t happen often. A woman in Lincolnshire, Great Britain, recently had triplets. This has come two years after having a daughter from the same set of harvested and cryopreserved eggs. Technically, quadruplets, separated by two years. “It is a fantastic situation,” said the medical director of the fertility clinic, Ken Dowell.

Doctors at the clinic described the births as “most unusual” while the Baxter family employed more flourish when they said they were “gobsmacked”.

The number of successful births in itself was reason to celebrate. “It is most unusual to see a set of triplets born from frozen embryos after a successful previous pregnancy from the same batch,” a spokesperson from Nottingham’s Care Fertility Clinic said.

The children’s mother had harvested her eggs and implanted two embryos about three years ago. From that pregnancy their first daughter was born. The remaining embryos were frozen. A few years later, three of those embryos were implanted, all of them successfully. Two girls and a boy were born last month.

“It was a complete shock,” said Mrs. Baxter. “We never imaged that we would end up with three babies from that same batch. . . We have had to buy a new car obviously to accommodate everybody. We have had to go out and buy three of everything - which has been a bit of a shock.”

Dowell said, “To have four babies from one set of eggs is very unusual. We run a big unit and we have never seen anything like it before in the 15 years we have been running the unit.”
