Sex and neurotics

Neurotic people have trouble sustaining relationships, marriage and creating families. But new studies show that if a neurotic newlywed has frequent sex, their marital satisfaction is equal to that of their non-neurotic counterpart.

Neurotic experience negative emotion and tend to get upset and irritated easily. They are moody and worry excessively. They also tend to be less satisfied with romance as a result they also experience divorce in higher numbers. "High levels of neuroticism are more strongly associated with bad marital outcomes than any other personality factor," said Michelle Russell and James McNulty of the University of Tennessee, co-authors of the study published in the latest issue of Psychological and Personality Science.

However, frequent sex in marriage makes people happy. Russell and McNulty explored specifically if frequent sex would make neurotics happier. The researchers followed married couples through the first four years of marriage and interviewed the couples about their satisfaction both together and separately.

On average, couple had sex about once a week for the first six months and leveled off at three times a month at year four. Sexual frequency and marital satisfaction were not related.

But the researchers found an important exception to this norm: spouses with high levels of neuroticism reported increased marital satisfaction with high frequency sex. In fact, frequent sex completely eliminated the negative effects of neuroticism. "Frequent sex is one way that some neurotic people are able to maintain satisfy relationships," the authors concluded.
