New research confirms it; women are crazed sex machines as they approach the end of their fertile years. They are more willing to try out a variety of sexual activities all meant to capitalize on those final years of fertility.
Psychologists at The University of Texas at Austin coined the magical phrase “reproduction expediting” when researching the phenomenon. Sexual adventurism includes more one night stands (yowza) and more adventurous bedroom behavior (yeehaw). The paper which was published in Personality and Individual Differences by psychology graduate students and David Buss, professor of psychology, and supports the idea that women between ages 27 and 45 become sexually preoccupied in response to dwindling fertility.
The study split a group of 827 women into three. One for high fertility, ages 18-26, another for low fertility, ages 27-45, and final menopausal, ages 46 and up. The women frankly answered an online questionnaire and the results were bared for all.
Women with low fertility, those cougars in the 27-45 range, admitted to frequent sexual fantasies, thoughts about sexual activity, more intense fantasies than the youngster group, a more active sex life including a willingness to hook up for a one night stand, and a general willingness to engage in casual sex.
Contrary to the researchers predictions, these sexually charged women did not fantasize solely about strange and exotic men - they fantasized about their significant partners! At least in equal amounts to the romantic mental meanderings about strangers.
Judith Easton, one of the research students, says these findings will impact reproductive and sexual health issues, such as fertility, sexual dysfunction (what dysfunction?) and marital development. “Our results suggest there is nothing special about the 30s, but that instead these behaviors manifest in all women with declining fertility. It may be more difficult to conceive past the age of 35, but our research suggests women’s psychology will continue to motivate them to try until menopause.”
Mature women enjoying and wanting sex? Wives who are stimulated by fantasizes about their husbands? Animal nature taking over, for one last hoorah, to ensure immortality through offspring? Only young graduate students would think this was news. But I must admit, I’m glad to know I’m not alone (woohoo).
