Kindara Reveals Fertility Tracking App For Phone

Colorado-based fertility tracking company Kindara revealed a smartphone-enabled fertility thermometer this week, which allows women to gauge their fertility and has helped over 30,000 users get pregnant.

This device, [Wink,] lives on a bedside table, inside a drawer maybe, next to the bed,” Kindara CEO and co-founder Will Sacks said. “The app has an alarm that wakes a woman up. When she wakes up…she takes her temperature in her mouth. Wink records her temperature [and] later, when convenient, she can log onto Kindara and see how her fertility is.”

The app also allows users to share fertility data with friends or practitioners on Kindara. Additionally, the Wink device has an LED display that shows the user’s basal body temperature to two decimal points directly after it takes a reading.

Sacks argued that Wink is superior to other fertility-tracking devices, which requires women to wear continuously and can be uncomfortable. The slight increase in accuracy, he insisted, was not worth the compromise.

“For women who want to avoid pregnancy, though, that would be a lifestyle change that they would be taking on for potentially years and years. Even for women who are trying to get pregnant it might be too much,” Sacks said. “I know people have used Kindara for a year or longer before they finally got pregnant. Asking someone to wear something for a year is a lot to ask.”

Sacks went on to describe the demographic for the Wink device. Some 65 percent of users are trying to get pregnant while using the app, while 25 percent are trying to avoid pregnancy and about 10 percent are trying to understand a cycle problem. Cyclical problems can include thyroid issues, endometriosis or any number of conditions.

Sacks noted that while Wink is the first real venue for Kindara, the company has three other devices in the works, each of which are designed for women.
