Unlikely book acknowledged for excellence

A book published in Iran last year is the winner of this year’s World Prize for the Book of the Year of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The book attempts to explain the reasons for the most drastic, rapid decline in fertility experienced by any modern nation. The Fertility Transition in Iran: Revolution and Reproduction was edited by Mohammad Jalal Abbasi-Shavazi, Peter McDonald and Meimanat Hosseini-Chavoshi.

The book is the first to research attempt to explain why the fertility rate in the Islamic Republic of Iran fell so dramatically at the end of the 20th century. Going against all other culture norms where Islamic communities have experienced nothing but explosive growth both inside and outside primarily Islamic countries, Iran’s birth rate dropped from 7.0 births per woman in the early 1980s to 1.9 births per woman in 2006. This is the largest and fastest fall in fertility ever recorded, or even suspected in history. The book documents the progress of their fertility decline and displays its association with social and economic characteristics as it attempts to explain the inexplicable.

The prize is awarded by the Iran Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance and was founded in 1983. The goal of the prize is to introduce international books and honor their authors for introducing and exploring general knowledge and culture.
