The truth: delaying motherhood decreases fertility

pensive

A recent study suggests that many women do not fully appreciate the consequences of delaying motherhood, and expect that assisted reproductive technologies will reverse or enhance their ovarian function.

“There is an alarming misconception about fertility among women,” said Pasquale Patrizio, MD, professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Yale School of Medicine and director of Yale Fertility Center. “We also found a lack of knowledge about steps women can take early in their reproductive years to preserve the possibility of conception later in life.”

The report originated from experiences Patrizio had with women coming into the fertility clinic at age 43 and older expecting to get pregnant without trouble. Most of these women are disappointed to learn the truth. “We are really seeing more and more patients ‘upset’ after failing in having their own biological child after age 43 so we had to report on this,” she explained. “Their typical reaction is, ‘what do you mean you cannot help me? I am healthy, I exercise, and I cannot have my own baby?’”

Women often delay pregnancy during their most fertile years for a number of reasons: career, relationship status, financial stability. They may be vaguely aware that there is a ticking clock, but it is only when they experience infertility firsthand that they being to comprehend the reality and the magnitude of the situation. Del

The growing awareness of assisted reproductive technologies has given many women a false sense of extending fertility.

“Even though the number of women turning to ART has increased, the number of I F cycles resulting in pregnancy in women above age 42 mostly remained static at 9% in 2009.
