High risk pregnancy?

Perhaps there should be another high risk category for pregnant women: those who have accepted donated eggs for their pregnancies. This is according to an
article by Ulrich Pecks and colleagues from the University Hospital Aachen as published in Deutsches Arzteblatt International.

They combine both case histories from their own experiences at their hospital and data from recent research publications to come to this conclusion. They discovered that in the past four years, eight women who had received donated eggs had to be treated for pregnancy-induced hypertension. Three of the pregnancies had to be terminated prematurely as
the mother’s life was in danger. The balance of the cases were mild in their symptoms and the women had normal, but monitored pregnancies.

Egg donation has gained in popularity over the last couple of decades, increasing every year. Since the German laws explicitly forbid egg donation as part of their protection of embryos, German couples often go to
neighboring European countries for the procedure. Once the pregnancy is confirmed, the families go home and are treated according to statutory maternity procedures.

Because of the authors' experience with hypertension, they strongly recommend that monitoring of these pregnancies take place by a specialist in maternofetal or neonatal obstetric medicine. More study will have to be done to determine if this is a dilemma particular to Germany and implantations from out of the country or if this is a more comprehensive
problem.
