High price of IVF

money

Anyone who has been through it knows IVF is a considerable investment of time, emotion and money. A lot of money. According to Fertility and Sterility, one cycle of IVF can cost $24,000 and carry a only a 50% success rate.

In the research, data was collected from eight fertility clinics in California and 398 patients were tracked from first evaluation through 18 months of treatment. Of that group, 311 decided to pursue the IVF course of treatment. Within that set, there were 105 deliveries and 40 ongoing pregnancies when the study was finalized.

The women who became pregnant reported a total investment in excess of $76,000 each. Costs naturally increased with intensity of treatment from simple injections through donor supplied eggs.

Approximately 1-2% of American women undergo fertility treatment. Insurance companies do not cover the cost of what they consider elective treatments. Because of this, many women may try to get the most out of their investment, opting for multiple egg transplants in spite of the fact that single egg transfer has a higher success rate. The risks of a multiple egg transfer include multiple births which typically bring low birth weight babies and a host of complications at delivery. Statistically development disorders are also higher in multiple births.

Still for a couple wanting a baby, the price can seem small. As long as these couples are informed and make decisions their circumstances can tolerate then risk is diminished and the experience can be better enjoyed.
