Chinese medicine and IUI used together improves conception rates

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has long been a go to for pain, treatment of symptoms, fertility treatments and prevention of miscarriage. TCM includes herbal remedies and acupuncture. The researchers from Tel Aviv University (TAU) have now discovered that a combination of TCM and intrauterine insemination (IUI) yields positive results for women trying to become pregnant.

This is the first study to look at how herbs and acupuncture in combination with IUI infertility treatment work. Dr. Shahar Lev-Ari and Keren Sela of TAU’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine and the Tel Aviv Medical Center say the results show a significant increase in fertility when the therapies are used in concert.

When using both TCM and IUI, 65.5% of the test group achieved conception. This is compared to the control group who had 39.4% pregnancy.

According to researchers, TCM is used to correct imbalances in the body’s natural energy flow, promoting an overall sense of well-being. There are many theories about why Chinese medicine works to improve fertility rates. It may be the possibility that herbal remedies and acupuncture can affect the ovulation and menstrual cycle, enhance blood flow to the uterus and enhance endorphin production and secretion to inhibit the central nervous system and induce calm. All of these have been show to improve rates of pregnancy.

Tests will continue. Now that they have shown data which suggests TCM improves results, researchers will design randomized clinical trials including placebos to further validate their initial findings.
