BV: an unknown condition affecting a third of women

Research published by Balance Activ of Great Britain shows the women are more aware of bikini waxing (67%) and vajazzles (48%) than they are about intimate health issues regarding their reproductive organs. Nearly two-thirds of women questioned in the survey were unaware of unsure of health problems that could lead to compromised fertility and risk of sexually transmitted disease.

BV may be responsible for one third of premature births

BV,or bacterial vaginosis, affects a third of all women and because very few know about the symptoms, very few women realize they have it or confuse it with some other infection. It is twice as prevalent as thrush and if left untreated during pregnancy can lead to serious complications. Pregnant women with BV are six times more likely to miscarry and twice as likely to go into labor prematurely. In fact, BV may be responsible for up to a third of all premature births in the UK. BV can also leave women more vulnerable to STDs kike gonorrhea and Chlamydia.

Women’s health issues still taboo

Getting information about these diseases isn’t easy for a lot of women. In the survey over a third of the women questioned admitted they would only feel comfortable getting health advice from online forums while nearly a fifth said they were too embarrassed to even speak to their regular doctor about it.

More information needed, more easily available

The new research was designed to coincide with National BV Day in Great Britain (April 16th). The study further reveals that 63% of women feel angry that more information on intimate health conditions is not made more easily available. Health experts are calling for more awareness of women’s health issues and the serious side effects of them.

BV is not a sexually transmitted disease

Through Balance Activ, women can access video with Dr. Dawn Harper explaining the key features of BV and how to treat it. BV is not a sexually transmitted disease and has nothing to do with poor hygiene. It is a condition caused by the vagina’s pH balance, which can be changed by something as simple as a bubble bath or scented soaps.
