Woman gives birth twice after ovarian transplant

For the first time after a woman’s fertility was restored from an ovarian tissue transplant, she has given birth to two girls. The first with the help of fertility treatment, but the second, a surprise pregnancy, was a natural and unassisted conception.

The mother, Mrs. Stinne Holm Bergholdt, had her case reported today in Europe’s medical journal Human Reproduction. “This is the first time in the world that a woman has had two children from separate pregnancies as a result of transplanting frozen/thawed ovarian tissue,” Dr. Claus Yding Andersen stated. “These results support cryopreservation of ovarian tissue as a valid method of fertility preservation and should encourage the development of this technique as a clinical procedure for girls and young women facing treatment that could damage their ovaries.”

So far nine children have been born as a result of transplanted frozen ovarian tissue. This includes Mrs Bergholdt’s two daughters.

Mrs. Bergholdt was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma when she was 27. Part of her ovary was removed and frozen before she started chemotherapy. While the cancer treatment was successful, her fertility was compromised. Thin strips of the frozen ovarian tissue were transplanted back onto the damaged ovary. The ovary began to work and with a little help from fertility treatments, she conceived her first daughter.

She went back to the clinic when she was ready for baby number two, and discovered at that time she was already pregnant. “This showed the that the original transplanted ovarian strips had continued to work for more than four years and that Mrs. Bergholdt still has the capacity to conceive and give birth to healthy children.” And amazingly, Mrs. Bergholdt is now using birth control measures to prevent future pregnancies.
