Leptin breakthrough will lead to fertility treatment

Medical researchers have unlocked the mystery of the human obesity receptor, an essential factor in the regulation of body fat. This will lead to better pharmaceutical treatments for obesity related disease and complications including infertility.

The new data should lead to the ability to generate drugs which can both block and stimulate the receptor for obesity hormone leptin. This will have life-changing effect on people who currently suffer from obesity and malnutrition.

Leptin, the obesity hormone, is produced by fat. Excess leptin predisposes overweight people to diseases like multiple sclerosis, cancer and heart disease. A deficiency in leptin can lead to malnutrition, immunodeficiency and infertility. Blocking the receptor could prevent some complications while stimulating the receptor can improve other conditions like infertility.

“This pioneering research gives us the potential to generate new drugs that could treat conditions and diseases associated with obesity such as Multiple Sclerosis, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Modulating the actions of the obesity receptor provides a novel approach to the treatment of conditions associated with both obesity and anorexia and has the potential to make a massive difference to millions of people whose quality of life and health is hindered by obesity or malnutrition,” said Professor Richard Ross, Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Sheffield.

Controlling appetite is a basic physiological drive which is connected to almost every other aspect of physiology as the body is fueled through dietary choices. In particular, fertility and the immune response are affected by appetite and diet.
