Laughing at infertility

ha

Could anything be more stressful than making every effort to create a baby and have nothing happen? Month after month. Then the humiliation of the fertility clinic and timed sex and sperm samples. Could there be a better time for a good laugh? Not likely.

And, studies show laughter reduces stress and releases endorphins which enhances fertility. Laughter is a sign of confidence - an ability to self deprecate in the face of disaster. And confidence is a sexy weapon in the battle against infertility.

“I really do believe that humor is one of the many healthy, affordable ways to cope with all the stress,” says Alison Wilson PhD at the Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine in Denver.

All the attempts and disappointments can be taxing, mentally and emotionally. If you can keep your sense of humor, you are well armored. “A lot of times the indignities involved with the procedures and the expectation s get so extreme,“ said licensed psychologist Janice Pimentel, who counsels patients with fertility issues. “Sarcasm and humor can be very useful in relieving stress and acknowledging that you are responding in a normal way to a crazy situation, as opposed to being crazy yourself.”

And, as if you didn’t see this one coming, humor is a fertility enhancer. In a 2002 study in Australia, researchers found that women who use humor as part of their artillery in the battle against infertility have higher success rates when using in vitro fertilization. Could laughter be the secret weapon? There is no reason not to throw your head back and give it a chance. Laugh in the face of infertility.
