Laugh your way to pregnant

clown

A study out of Israel tells us that you can laugh at infertility and get pregnant along the way. In a study of 229 Israeli women who underwent in vitro fertilization, researchers found that those women who spent 15 minutes with a “medical clown” immediately after implantation had a higher pregnancy rate. Significantly higher, almost doubling the average.

Success rates rose from 20% to 36% after the entertainment and those numbers are nothing to laugh at. After factoring variables like the women’s ages, the duration of their infertility, the number of embryos used and the day of medical transfer, the effect was even greater: up to 2.67 times more likely to experience a successful pregnancy.

The research is published in Infertility and Sterility and was conducted by Shevach Friedler. The medical clown came dressed as a chef and performed the same light comedy routine for all the women. The idea was to reduce the stress and anxiety that most women feel after having the IVF procedure.

Studies have also found that acupuncture given post IVF can help reduce stress and improve chances of a successful operation. Following the same principle, a clown can’t hurt and at least for the moment the women will have something to laugh about.
