Chiropractics may help with conception

Spine

Infertility is a dramatic and emotional issue for many families - approximately 7 million in the United States alone. It seems natural that a dramatic problem requires a dramatic solution. This is not always the case. Chiropractic care has been a successful treatment - both less invasive and less expensive - for many women trying to conceive.

Spinal distortions may be causing hormonal imbalances which can prevent a woman from getting pregnant. Anything that can be done to correct this imbalance can help improve fertility rates. “Research is revealing that there is a relationship between abnormalities in the spine, the nervous system and the reproductive system,” stated Dr. Joel Alcantara, lead author of a report released in July 2009 to the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health-Chiropractic. “There are over a dozen case studies previously published that show successful conceptions and the delivery of healthy children following the introduction of chiropractic care.”

In an editorial in thebahamasweekly.com, Dr. Brian Blower, DC, explained the connection. “There is often a nerve root lesion existing as a vertebral subluxation at the level of the upper lumbar spine. That area is just below the ribs at the lower mid back and reflects an area prone to injury through twisting of the upper body . . . this may have happened years and years before presentation. All of those years and years, subluxations may be there and we don’t feel it, it is the ‘silent killer’.” Chiropractic treatments can correct subluxations in the spine in about four to six months. Once alignment has been achieved, adequate neural impulses go where they are suppose to when they are suppose to ensuring appropriate hormones are being released where needed in the reproductive system.

When looking for a chiropractor, be sure to ask if he or she has experience with infertility treatments. You may also request referrals from current and/or previous patients regarding their experience, successful or not. Ask if they are familiar with Dr. Madeline Behrendt’s 2003 study directly linking appropriate chiropractic care to overcoming infertility challenges.

Chiropractic treatment may be a good, less invasive way of starting your journey to overcome infertility. Used alone or in concert with other therapies, chiropractics could increase your chances of achieving a successful pregnancy. “Considering the fact that every single function of the body is controlled by the nervous system it should not surprise anyone that removing interference to the nerves that control reproductive function would lead to alleviation of some of the problems related to infertility,” remarked Dr. Matthew McCoy, a chiropractor, public health research and editor of the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health-Chiropractic .
