Born a pauper to a pawn on a Christmas Day

I know of no other story of parenthood which has so many challenges, has been lived out in the public eye and ultimately has such a triumphant and energizing ending.

Elton John is 63. He’s gay. He’s a former drug addict. He’s had financial difficulties. He has had an outrageous past. And in one of the most heart breaking public displays of rigid formalities, he was not allowed to adopt an HIV positive baby because of his age and his personal partnership with David Furnish – a relationship clearly one of stability and long term dedication spanning 17 years. The photos of Elton John holding baby Lev and ultimately letting him go still bring me to tears.

But this Christmas, sadness turned to joy as he and his partner announced that they are now fathers. The Center for Surrogate Parenting out of Encino, CA helped with the ultimate delivery. It has been announced that the surrogate mother used at least one donated egg and there is only speculation about the source of the sperm. The bio dad could be either father or even a third party. I think that too makes this ultimately a lovely story. They didn’t give up. They kept trying and made that extra effort.

And they managed to keep it private. No one knew about the baby’s pending birth until his arrival was announced on December 27. Baby boy Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John is happy and healthy with two parents who no doubt will give him everything. It’s an inspiration to all those families who face difficulties and challenges. Keep trying.
