BOGO vasectomies from PETA

puppy needs a snip

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - PETA sort of stepped in it this past week when it announced that to commemorate National Infertility Awareness Week, they are offering to neuter one human pet caretaker who shows he neutered his pet. It’s all meant in good fun, but many people who suffer with infertility problems think it’s a tasteless tie in. PETA shouldn’t hold a cheeky contest to make people infertile during a week focused on creating awareness for those families struggling to reproduce.

I think offended parties are doing the right thing by posting their indignation on the PETA website. But if you can get past the bad timing and ill advised association with the very real and painful experience of human infertility, it’s kind of an interesting twist to bring the animals into it and you must admit PETA does have a knack for stirring it up.

“Human overpopulation is crowding out animal life on the planet, and dog and cat overpopulation is creating a euthanasia crisis that is a crying shame,” the promotion reads. Yeah, a bit offensive for the woman yearning for a baby.

And the drama continues, “Disappearing wilderness, vanishing water resources, and pollution is the price that future generations will pay for more human births, while losing their lives is the price that millions of homeless dogs and cats pay when guardians neglect to ‘fix’ their companion animals.” Who knew a single prize vasectomy could address such a problem?

The contest entrants need to answer the question, “Why should PETA neuter you?” I can’t help but wonder how many women will enter their ex-husbands and dead beat dads. They must also provide evidence that their pets were neutered between March 29 and April 27.

Check out the website, PETA.org, for entry restrictions and forms. And to note your dissatisfaction if you feel so inclined.
