Adoption brings together unlikely family

hands

An adoption in Camden, South Carolina shows that decades may separate a mother from her baby, but it doesn’t make them any less a family. An adoption finalized earlier in June brought together mom Elizabeth Rogers, 79 years old, and daughter Asia, five years old. It’s certainly not a traditional or expected relationship.

Rogers has been taking in foster kids for years. She took in Asia when the little girl was only nine months old. This is the first foster baby to stay. “At 18 months, they asked me if I wanted to keep her,” said Rogers. “I said I would keep her as long as possible, if need be. The said, ‘no, we mean to adopt her.’ She was there, jumped out of her chair, got into my lap and we both were crying. She understood everything.”

So the paperwork began. “I didn’t birth her but from the beginning, she was mine and that’s it,” insists Rogers. “Sometimes they think I’m the grandmother. [Asia] says ‘Oh no, this is my mommy’.”

Asia is indeed special. Not only does the five year old have a 10 year old nephew and a another who is 25, she speaks Spanish and reads long form, chapter books, including the Bible. “Look at me and tell me I’m not blessed,” laughs Rogers.
