Pregnancy Massage

Women who are pregnant are often achy, tired and a little sore from trying to adapt to a changing body. Pregnancy massage can be an effective tool to relieve stress, reduce swelling and back and neck pain, improve muscle tone, and stimulate the circulatory system. According to researchers, it can decrease symptoms of depression, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health.

There are several different types of massage. Not all of them are effective or safe for pregnancy massage. For example, deep tissue work is not an appropriate massage tool for pregnant women.

Find a massage therapist who has experience offering pregnancy massage. You need to look for someone who is a certified prenatal massage therapist. Your health care provider may be an excellent resource and know of recommended massage therapists in your area.

A few women are not good candidates for pregnancy massage, including those who are at risk for an early delivery or who have been experiencing Braxton- Hicks contractions. Some women may have other health conditions that make massage counter-productive, so discussing your plan with your health care provider is always a safer choice.
