Hi all,
Does anyone know what the normal time span to be given progesterone is, while trying to conceive?
I am 38 and have read lots about progesterone supplements being given for up to 12 weeks or even longer in mums over 35 to assist with implantation and ensure ongoing fetal growth.

However, I was only given progesterone pessaries for 10 days after embryo transfer?
Same with HCG injections, whats the norm?
I have read that in mums over 30, extra HCGcould be administered to decrease the risk of early pregnancy demise!
Has anyone heard about either of these? Im especially curious about the recommended length of time to take progesterone & who decides these things?
thanks again ladies.

On both my IUI and IVF protocols I was put on progesterone and if the pregnancies were viable I would have been kept on it until 12 weeks I believe. I'm not sure about the HCG aspect. My IVF's were all done when I was 39. I'm 40 and trying another IVF next month; on month short of my 41st b-day.

Thanks for that info. I knew it sounded right and I have heard that many other ladies also had progesterone up to 12 weeks especially those over 30-35.
When you say that you were on progesterone once the pregnancy was confirmed, what happened during the interim? Did you just have it for a certain time period and then recommence? or did you stay on it the entire time? Sorry but I was a little confused about that aspect!
My concern is that if its only given for a limited time (as in my case) and then not recommenced until the pregnancy is confirmed (approx 3 weeks) then what are the dangers of the prog levels dropping at such a critical time?
Thanks again for reponding, it has helped to know someone elses experience in similar circumstances,
Cheers, Sue

I have already been through one IVF treatment and failed. Have been on progesterone treatment and that must be taken non stop for at least 12 weeks until they feel the placenta can do a fine job on its own. Make sure you go to a reputable fertility specialist and you will be fine. Ask lots of questions and if they are too busy to answer them, you are going to the wrong dr. You are spending a TON of money and they should answer any and all questions you have.
Also, I have been going through several treatments on fertility now and one thing they never mention is preconception care. They should. Make sure you are taking more than a prenatal vitamin and make sure you are eating very very healthfully. I have more thoughts on that if anyone would like to know.
