Finding Infertility information and support on YouTube

Regardless of what situation you are coping with, there are plenty of resources online. Infertility is no exception. Some websites are fantastic, others are…well, crap. Lots of websites designed to separate you from your money (some more legitimate than others), lots of badly designed websites by people around the world tying to capitalize and monetize on your struggle and a few decent ones truly worth your time.
Now, if you know YouTube (and who doesn’t), you probably know it a place to go to look at really stupid videos of people or animals doing really stupid things.
For example, if you don't smile while watching this video, you're most likely evil

Back on point. YouTube videos can actually be valuable sources of information and not just 13 year old rambling about their politics. Here are some videos you may find useful:

Gluten & Infertility

As I mentioned earlier, I am inviting a few friends and colleagues to share some of their wisdom with you in the next few weeks. I hope you will enjoy a different perspective. Today, welcome my friends at Laughing Sage Wellness.
“Gluten, gluten, gluten! By now if you’re not already gluten-free, you’ve probably heard the term. Something that may seem like just another diet fad is actually a much more serious health concern, especially for those of us who already have underlying hormonal sensitivities. Over the past decade, we at LSW have seen the connection between gluten sensitivity and hormonal balance and have helped thousands of women use food as medicine to heal their reproductive health. We're so excited that science is finally catching up! Recent research has determined that gluten intolerance, or celiac disease, may also be a cause of infertility.
Here are some facts you should know:
1 in 133 people have celiac disease, but rates of undiagnosed or hidden celiac disease people bring that number up to 1 in 2
Infertile women are 10 times more likely to have celiac disease than fertile women.
39% of women with celiac disease suffer from ammenorhea (absent menstrual cycles)

You may be wondering why that is. In people with gluten allergies or sensitivities, when gluten is consumed, the immune system responds by destroying the villi (small, finger-like projections) on the small intestine. This causes malabsorption of nutrients and a slower transit time of food passing through the intestines. Slower transit time means that excess estrogen and other hormones and toxins are not eliminated from the body properly, contributing to a hormonal balance that can interfere with ovulation.
Some symptoms that indicate you may be at risk of infertility and/or a gluten allgery:
Bloating, gas or abdominal pain
Diarrhea or constipation
Chronic fatigue and weakness
Indigestion
Absent or irregular menstrual cycles
Prolonged use of hormonal contraceptives
Skin issues
Fatigue and/or weakness
Irritability or behavior change

Prepping Your Body for Pregnancy

Those who take medicine and neglect their diet waste the skill of the physician.
--Chinese proverb
You may think you can start worrying about nutrition when you actually get a positive pregnancy test, but you’d be wrong. First of all, of the nine months of gestation, however, the first three are the most important. Plus, what you eat can affect your likelihood of getting pregnant. Research indicates certain vitamins and dietary adjustments can restore hormonal functioning, reduce FSH levels, and ultimately help them get pregnant.

Here are some tips:
Try to eliminate all potential food allergens, including dairy, wheat (gluten), soy, corn, preservatives, and food additives. Your health care provider may want to test for food sensitivities.
Eat calcium rich foods, including beans, almonds, and dark green leafy vegetables (such as spinach and kale).
Avoid refined foods such as white breads, pastas, and sugar.
Eat lean meats, cold-water fish, tofu (soy), and beans for protein.
Use healthy cooking oils, such as olive oil or vegetable oil.
Reduce or eliminate trans-fatty acids, found in commercially baked goods such as cookies, crackers, cakes, French fries, onion rings, donuts, processed foods, and margarine
Drink 6 - 8 glasses of filtered water daily.
Kick the caffeine. Now.
Folic acid, folic acid, folic acid. Did I mention folic acid?

The most annoying infertility story of the week

The verdict is in – the most annoying infertility story of the week was Guiliana and Bill Rancic’s segment on the view. The reason? Her hesitation to gain 5 or 10 pounds, which her doctor says may help her and her husband, conceive after nine months of not being able to.
If you haven’t seen her, she’s Hollywood skinny, which means she damn near skeletal. In an explanation that rankled viewers, she told The View co-hosts she prefers being thin. After all, she said, she needs to be thin for her job in the entertainment industry.
I hate to be the one to break it to her, but women do gain weight when they are pregnant. And more than 5-10 pounds.
If you catch up on Twitter, or read any mommy blogs, there were some honked off mamas, and especially the mamas to be. Those who would very much like to be pregnant but can’t reacted understandably strongly. Can you imagine if you endometriosis (March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, by the way and we’ll have more on that later), or you know you need IVF but cannot begin to afford it, and you have to listen to a rich….um…actress complain about it’s just soo haard (insert whiny voice here) to gain weight and stay famous at the same time.
Put your big girl panties on, Guiliana.

If you’ve got PCOS, you know how difficult it can be. Tough to get pregnant. Tough to lose weight. Tough to feel good about ourselves.
If you haven’t visited www.incyst.com, do it today. Incyst is composed of a network of professionals dedicated to promoting hormone health, PCOS, insomnia, infertility, weight management, stress are our main specialties They are on twitter and facebook, too and they are dedicated to providing news, support, research and more for women living with PCOS and their health care providers.
For example, they had this research study that I (gasp!) missed:
In women who were diabetic before conceiving, the incidence of birth defects in their babies increased. In the time that these women were pregnant, the rate of pre-gestational diabetes tripled, from 1% to 3%. The risk of birth defects potentially attributed to pre-gestational diabetes jumped during the time of the study, from 3.3% to 9.2%.

In 2007, 4,317,119 babies were born in the United States. 129,513 of those babies were born to mothers who were diabetic prior to conception. That means 11,915 of those babies were born with birth defects potentially related to the mother's diabetes.
They offer tons of events and you can easily subscribe to their RSS feed. Do it today.
