Picking a Doc

Infertility docs are an unusual breed. I have met some of the nicest and some of the un-nicest (I know) doctors who work in this field and realize it can be hard to navigate. For every doc who push for 15 rounds of IVF, to those with no bedside manner, there are some whose compassion, expertise and knowledge make me proud to know them.

How hard can it be? You look online for the closest fertility doctor (otherwise known as a reproductive endocrinologist) or you go to the guy your OB/GYN recommends.

Except -- what if the closest fertility doctor has an embryologist who barely has a college degree and no graduate work training?

Or what if the center's success rates look great, but only because they push every woman over 35 into donor eggs right away?

You can always look online (http://www.sart.org/find_frm.html) to find statistics, but they might be outdated, or maybe not quite as clear as you'd hope.

The biggest mistake people make is choosing a clinic because they read online that he or she was wonderful or that he or she is the cheapest. While money matters, spending big bucks on a bad IVF with no embryos isn't going to do you much good.

Choose carefully. You have a lot at stake.
