National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW)

In honor of National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW), I want to encourage everyone to step up and work together to increase access to care. Even though over 7.3 million women and their partners experience infertility, only a very small percentage of these families actually are able to seek appropriate fertility care. Cost in the major barrier given most families lack any insurance coverage for infertility. This needs to change!
For over 70 percent of families struggling to have a baby, fertility-related expenses must be paid completely out-of-pocket. How can this be with almost one in six couples in this situation? Why won’t more insurance companies foot the bill for at least some of these expenses? It just doesn’t make sense.
35 states have no infertility insurance mandates. And many of the existing15 more fertility-friendly states battle each year to maintain their laws, not to mention not all companies in these states meet the criteria necessary to have to provide insurance coverage anyway.
For residents of Massachusetts, your help, via a letter, a phone call, an e-mail and especially your presence at The State House tomorrow, 4/27 can have an immediate impact on insurance coverage for infertility treatment.
