ICSI Last Resort Infertility Treatment

ICSI stands for Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection. In this procedure a single sperm is surgically injected directly into a single egg. This form of treatment helps couples who are infertile because of male infertility factors.

ICSI was first used by researchers in Belgium. The American Society for reproductive Medicine endorses the procedure and it is widely used when all other forms of assisted reproduction fail. In ICSI, sperm is directly injected into the egg unlike IVF where sperm and eggs are mixed in a test tube for the formation of an embryo. ICSI is a new procedure and little is known about the problems and side effects of reproduction through this method. ICSI children have not become adults for researchers to understand and cure any possible health issues of children born through the procedure. Couples have a 34% chance of conceiving and a 28% chance of having a baby after the procedure.
