Counseling Infertility

Counseling is necessary for couples who have an infertility problem. Infertility affects the mind of couples who want a child of their own. Psychological problems can cause problems in intercourse and result in infertility.

The psychological problems faced by infertile couples range from sadness, feelings of worthlessness, mood swings, marital discord, drug or alcohol addiction and in extreme cases suicide. The couple must obtain a list of qualified counselors from their physician and obtain simultaneous counseling when planning to get their infertility treated. Counselors are psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers or nurses. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine has a list of counselors in the, ‘Patient Information’, page on their website. Some couples find solace and help in a support group by talking to other couples in a similar situation. Therapy goes a long way in reducing stress and helps couples deal with infertility after all other methods have been exhausted.
