Sucker for a Sappy Surrogacy Story

If you’e having a blue day – don’t read this. But if you need a little inspiration, this is encouraging. Stacy Lucatello’s body refused to fulfill her dream. It took a friend’s tremendous sacrifice to finally make the 34-year-old a mother — and to her surprise, a mother of triplets. Stacy’s children, Luke, Jake and Sofia, were born a minute apart from each other on April 15 to her friend, 32-year-old Taryn Britton.

The Lucatellos had for five years tried — and failed — to have a child. In August 2007, Stacy gave birth three months early to stillborn twin girls. It broke her heart.

Doctors figured out in the weeks after the stillbirth that Stacy had developed a kidney disease in the time since she’d conceived the sickly twins. To conceive again would almost certainly imperil her life, they warned.

Stacy didn’t entirely give up on her dream, but she said she half-resigned herself to the idea that to have children she would need to adopt or pay tens of thousands of dollars for a surrogate. Either way, it would likely become a years-long ordeal.

Taryn and her husband had visited the Lucatellos a few months after the twins died. The Lucatellos hadn’t seen the Brittons in years, so they talked about their ongoing struggle to have children and the last try that ended in heartbreak. The Lucatellos told the Brittons about the new house in Lodi, how they built it with two bedrooms, one for them and the other for their baby girls.

Their first IVF cycle worked – after implanting three embryos. An uneventful pregnancy led to the healthy arrival of the triplets.

“When I saw Stacy hold her babies for the first time, she just glanced over at me, and I saw tears in her eyes,” Taryn remembered. “And I knew she had made the connection she wanted for so long — that she finally felt like a mother.”
