Curing Infertility by Treating the Thyroid

Infertility is often caused because of an untreated thyroid problem. Experts often recommend that a TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) test is taken before resorting to any other form of treatment. This simple test may be all the couple needs to conceive. Many couples opt for IVF and other expensive forms of treatment when correcting the function of the thyroid will instantly cure infertility.

A TSH test should be taken if there is a family history of thyroid problems, if menstrual periods are irregular, if the couple has not conceived after 6 months of unprotected intercourse and if the woman has suffered previous miscarriages. The irregular function of the thyroid inhibits fertility by increasing the production of prolactin, by blocking the effects of the hormone estrogen and by causing uterine bleeding. A TSH test should be taken before trying to get pregnant and the couple will conceive a month or two after treatment.
