Smoking Pot Depletes Baby-Making Ability

We’ve known for awhile that men who smoke marijuana frequently have significantly less seminal fluid, a lower total sperm count and their sperm behave abnormally. Pot smoking is definitely a no-no if you want to grow your family.
Here are some other facts you may find helpful:
• Pot smokers sperm move out of the gate at top speed, but they burn out quickly. Sometimes before they have a chance to make it to the egg for fertilization.
• THC, the ingredient that affects your brain in marijuana, interferes with the way a sperm is able to penetrate and fertilize a female egg.
• Marijuana causes a break in the DNA of sperm. These breaks occur in proportion to the amount you smoke. The more you smoke the more damage you are causing to your sperm.
• Men who smoke marijuana frequently have significantly less seminal fluid, and a lower total sperm count than non pot smokers.

However, researchers have found the trigger that activates sperm to start them swimming, which could lead to a male contraceptive and also explain the link between marijuana use and sperm damage.

Proteins called Hv1 in the tails, or flagella, of sperm eject protons in response to alkaline conditions outside the cell, such as in the vagina, said a study published today in the journal Cell. This elevates the pH inside the sperm and activates the flagella for swimming. This research m ay lead to the development of an effective male contraceptive pill.
