Research studies have shown that fertility levels of modern man have significantly dropped by half. This reproductive inefficiency has been blamed on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and chemicals from plastics which are used everyday. Common chemicals like alcohol and pesticide residues in food have been shown to cause sperm damage which can eventually lead to conceiving children with lowered intelligence and behavioral disorders.
Cigarette smoking, increased alcohol intake, stress and nutritional imbalances are negative by-products of a modern lifestyle in the fast lane. Although prostatitis and diabetes have been known for a long time to influence sperm production and quality, modern times have also added pollution as one of the most important causes of male infertility. Environmental toxins and pesticide residues which are present in the atmosphere can be imbibed slowly into the system and can accumulate inside the body to create havoc on male fertility. The effects can be traced from spermatogenesis within the testes, to sperm transport, sperm nutrition, anatomical abnormalities, sperm mobility and the ability of the sperm to fertilize a mature egg.
Environmental toxins and pesticide residues are also important predisposing factors of some forms of cancers.
