Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases can Lead to Infertility

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) can be caused by many factors which may be infectious or non-infectious in nature. Infectious causes include sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea or Chlamydia which can result in inflammation of the cervix. The bacterial infection may reach and invade the fallopian tube and ovary where they can form a tubo-ovarian abscess which is an accumulation of pus. PID can also develop to the inflammation of the uterus which in turn can lead to the formation of adhesions or scar tissue within the reproductive organs and abdominal cavity. The formation of scar tissue will not always be exhibited by noticeable signs or symptoms.

If the scarring occurs inside the fallopian tubes, this can create a blockage leading to permanent infertility.

Invasive surgical procedures such as dilation and curettage (D&C), induced abortion, hysterosalpingogram test, and even the insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD) can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) and eventually infertility.
