• More than 5 million women have either experienced early menopause or are at risk for experiencing it.

• The typical age of menopause is around fifty. But for millions of women (most recent statistics state one in nine), menopause occurs before the age of forty.

• Many factors can play a role in early menopause. For example:

o Each year, half a million women go through premature menopause because their ovaries stop functioning normally.
o Two million women experience surgical menopause every year.
o More than 60,000 women of childbearing age are diagnosed with some type of cancer annually. Cancer treatments (such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgical treatments) can all cause early menopause.
o More than 500,000 young women are survivors of childhood cancer or cancer during their early reproductive years; most of them will experience the side effect of early menopause.
