Diabetes equals weaker sperms

As if diabetic men do not have enough problems with their blood sugar and all, a recent study in Ireland showed that men with diabetes have weaker sperms because of the damage caused by diabetes to the sperm DNA.

For older diabetic men, this may not be of much concern because they have already maximized the use of their sperms. But since more and more young men are being diagnosed with diabetes, this finding is an alarming one for men who still want to father children.

The sperm produced by men with diabetes are said to be of low quality, meaning they have difficulty entering an ovum. If they are able to enter the ovum, the resulting embryo is also of low quality.

These findings were all seen in the molecular DNA level, which means that this is not routinely done as part of infertility screenings. Maybe this time, this will be already added as an infertility criterion.
