When Your Friend Gets Pregnant

I had been trying for number two for several years and had already suffered a miscarriage. I was gearing up for another round of treatments when my friend (and frequent co-author) began her first round of Clomid. You know how it is when someone you know just starts Clomid. Yawn. You remember those days, back when you thought it was a magic pill.
Anyway, as you may have guessed, she got pregnant the first month. (I also got pregnant that cycle, but I was a few weeks behind her). Not knowing that at the time, I got to “celebrate” with her. And by celebrate, I mean “pretend to be nice while secretly being annoyed.”
If you’ve ever tried for a baby for longer than you expected, you understand. A woman I know sent me this note recently about how she copes with similar news.
“Some things still hurt, like seeing pictures of my in-laws holding a baby of a family friend, a baby that I will never be able to give them. I also find myself worrying about how that makes my husband feel. We all need to find ways to really let our pain out. Holding it in just makes it so much worse. I decided to try some counseling and it is making such a difference. Just having someone reassure me that it is entirely understandable that we will feel wretched at other people's happy news is a huge relief. I have slowly started to feel more optimistic about my life with or without children in it.”
