There is Justice in the World

Ok. Ok, not a lot, but there is a little. The simple biology of reproductive testing and treatment generally favor men. For the most part, women are the ones sticking their feet in the stirrups, getting shots in the tummy and hips and popping pills like there’s no tomorrow. Plus, there’s the whole no taking any medication stronger than a baby aspirin and having to abstain from alcohol and caffeine. (The inhumanity of it all) Caffeine was tough for me. I would do an IV drip of Diet Coke if it would make it flow into my body faster in the morning.

During my last round of infertility treatment, I got hooked on Perrier. Trust me, I don’t have a Perrier budget. I have a tap water with ice cubes budget. Not even Evian. For some reason, during one treatment cycle, lemon Perrier was the only thing that sounded good to drink. After paying (I can’t say in case my husband reads this blog) lt’s just say an obscene amount for a month’s worth of overpriced fuzzy water, my blood pressure went up. “Didn’t you read the sodium content on the label?” asked my doctor. Well know, I was too hypnotized by the little bubbles…

I am back on Diet Coke now, but I did read with some pleasure research that indicates Excess caffeine may be a problem. It is thought to interfere with sperm metabolism and sperm formation. This is more likely with a heavy coffee drinker - 4 to 8 cups a day. There is a low, but definite, correlation between excess caffeine and impaired sperm function. Reduce (or weaken) the volume of cof¬fee, tea and cola drinks containing caffeine. So boys – no caffeine!
