Sex Week at Yale

Corey Whelan & Ken Mosesian of AFA-fame will be presenting “Why Nature Wants You To Get Laid Right Now (But please wait until we leave the room…)“ during Sex Week at Yale next week.

First of all, I love, love, love the idea of Sex Week. It’s a campus-wide interdisciplinary sex education program designed to pique students’ interests and spark dialogue about sexuality through creative, interactive, and innovative programming. SWAY is at the cutting-edge of college-aged sex education, pushing students to think about sex, love, intimacy, and relationships in ways like never before with a week full of guest lectures, panel discussions, hands-on workshops, parties, presentations, and student productions.

So what’s my problem? Executive Director Ken Mosesian, and sidekick Corey will befocusing on “The Biological Clock.” What are the consequences of waiting to have children? Are genetic defects more likely to be caused by an older man’s sperm or an older woman’s egg? When exactly is the ideal time to have kids?

Great idea – I even love the topic title. And I suspect Ken and Corey will be funny, articulate and mostly accurate.

Here is the fundamental question that I wonder why people aren’t asking: Does running a NPO make you a health educator? Why doesn’t AFA or RESOLVE hire people who have degrees in public health or medicine to do the critical task of educating people of sexuality and fertility issues? Every other major health organization, from the American Cancer Society to the American Heart Association, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and more all have trained professional health educators to develop curriculum and do presentations. Why are we in the fertility field less interested in making sure the people who talk for us know what they’re talking about?
