Global economic crunch lead to rise in egg, sperm donations

A news report published on the leading newspaper Boston Globe noted the increase in egg and sperm donations during the time when the global economy suffers recession.

Based on the news report egg donor agencies in the Boston area report a 25% to 100% increase in donor applications compared with this time one year ago, and sperm banks across New England have seen a similar rise in applicants during the past six months.

Sanford Benardo, president of Northeast Assisted Fertility Groups, an egg donation and surrogacy agency explained the economy seems to have inspired more people to look at alternative ways to earning money.

“Applications for potential egg donors have more than doubled in the past year at Benardo's agency," the report quoted Benardo saying.

Benardo noted the economy has created a "paradox" in the industry in that the number of donor applicants has increased, but the demand for donors has declined.

Although the sale of eggs is illegal, donors usually receive compensation fees ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 for their time and inconvenience.

Sperm donors receive an average of $85 to $100 per donation.

Egg donors typically must be healthy non-smokers ages 21 to 32 with a good family health history, and "reasonably educated and reasonably attractive." The screening for donors usually involves physical, psychological and genetic testing. Individuals who are accepted hormone injections and a surgical procedure to remove the eggs.
