Insuring Infertility

Infertility is not normally insured by insurance companies. Infertility is being seen as a disability these days and 15 states in the US have state mandated insurance plans for infertility treatments.

Though some insurance policies cover infertility treatments, they usually limit the sum that can be spent by the patient on infertility treatments. The patient should check the policy carefully. If the policy specifically excludes infertility then coverage is not available. Insurance companies are expected to cover all disabilities and health procedures unless specifically excluded and this includes infertility. The patient should shop among policies to get the infertility policy with the least limits on coverage. Some policies come with a rider for infertility treatment for which a higher premium is charged. Employer’s health insurance policies sometimes include infertility in the insurance policy’s list of covered treatments. Infertility coverage includes medication, surgery and assisted reproduction procedures like IUI and IVF.
