PCOS and infertility

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)is a health problem in which a woman’s hormones are out of balance and cause unhealthy side effects. It can cause problems with the regularity of menstruation which makes it difficult for a woman to conceive a child. PCOS, because of the hormone imbalance can also cause unwanted changes to your appearance include added weight and unwanted hair.

1 in 15 women live with PCOS

PCOS is more common than most women know. As many as one in 15 women has PCOS. Often symptoms first appear during the teen years. There are treatments for the symptoms which can help control some of the side effects, but there is no cure for PCOS.

It’s all about hormone imbalance

Hormones are central to the disorder. Different hormones cause different reactions in the body. Some of those effects include growth and energy production. Sometimes a hormone will signal the release of more hormones. For women with PCOS, the ovaries, which normally make a small amount of the male hormone androgen, start making a lot more of it. The increased androgens cause ovulation to cease, body and facial hair to grow and acne to emerge.

The body may also develop insulin resistance as a result of PCOS. When the body does not efficiently use insulin, blood sugars go up and over time diabetes may develop.

Symptoms can be controlled but not cured

Symptoms develop slowly and may increase with their severity. Some women may have more symptoms than other women. There are a few women who do not even realize they have PCOS. For others it is debilitating.

Symptoms can be controlled with diet and exercise. There are a few medicines which can control the hormone imbalance. Primarily healthy lifestyle choices can control some of the more bothersome aspects of PCOS and a normal, healthy life including children can be achieved. Working closely with your doctor will make the difference.
