Infertility Treatment Cost

Once you’ve faced the difficult prospect of infertility, your next question is likely, “How much is it going to cost to achieve my dream of children and family?” The answer isn’t an easy one – costs can vary. The answer depends on the reason for your infertility, your age and your health.

The average cost of one cycle of in vitro fertilization (IVF) is about $12,000. It usually tops out at $15,000. You may get a quote from a clinic for less than $10,000. If that happens press the clinic for an all inclusive estimate. This should include drugs, ultrasound and monitoring costs and bloodwork. Don’t forget to include travel expenses if that’s a part of your budget. A frozen embryo transfer will be much less expensive than a fresh embryo transfer. An IVF cycle using a previously frozen embryo can cost $3,000.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) of eggs followed by IVF and embryo transfer may be another type of procedure recommended to you because of your particular cause of infertility. This is the process whereby a healthy sperm is injected into a harvested egg. This can be an additional $1,000 to $1,500.

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) could also be recommended if there is a long history of miscarriage. This process tests and screens the genetic viability of an embryo prior to implantation. The test will show genetic disease prior to implantation. This is one of the causes of miscarriage. This procedure will add $3,000 or more to the cost of IVF.

Egg, sperm and embryo donors

Donated eggs will significantly increase the expense – by as much as $25,000 to $30,000 per cycle depending on the egg bank or donor used. Sperm donation is much less expensive at $13,000 to $17,000 per cycle. Embryo donation is the least expensive of the donation costs. It can run between $5,000 and $7,000 per cycle. This is the type of donation where the embryo is already created and cryopreserved. It can be prepared to meet your cycle schedule which reduces the cost.
