Herbs for Infertility

If you’re experiencing problems trying to conceive, you may want to try herbal remedies before you visit a conventional doctor – or you might decide to use natural fertility medicines in addiction to seeing a traditional medical practitioner.

Vitex, or chasteberry, is said to help you become more fertile by regulating your menstrual cycle. It can lengthen a short luteal phase, which is the time after you ovulate: if you menstruate too soon after you ovulate, your egg won’t have time to implant itself firmly in the uterine wall before the uterine lining begins to shed, and you won’t be able to maintain a pregnancy. Vitex can also lower your body’s levels of prolactin, a hormone that can cause infertility in too-high amounts.

Red raspberry leaf can lengthen the luteal phase too, by strengthening the uterine lining. Drink it in tea or take it in capsules.

If you have cervical mucus that’s not hospitable to sperm – if it’s white or sticky around the time of ovulation, as opposed to clear and stretchy, which it should be in order for sperm to thrive in it - evening primrose oil can help improve its quality. Capsules of evening primrose oil are available at health-food stores and some smaller supermarkets. It should only be taken up to the time you ovulate, however: it can cause uterine contractions, so after you ovulate, it may prevent an egg from implanting.

Green tea is another herbal remedy that can improve the quality of cervical mucus. You can drink green tea all the way through your menstrual cycle.

For men battling infertility, flaxseed oil may help increase blood flow to the penis and keep sperm active and healthy. The lignans and phytoestrogens in flaxseed oil are also good for women: they help balance estrogen and progesterone. Those who suffer from bleeding associated with endometriosis may find flaxseed oil relieves their symptoms somewhat – it blocks excess production of prostaglandins that are released when you begin to menstruate, and so slows excessive bleeding that can also complicate fertility.
