Can acupuncture cure infertility?

The short answer is, no one knows for sure. Studies do show that acupuncture can improve conception odds, however, the relationship between the ancient science and fertility has never been proven to be causal. Still, acupuncture is a less invasive, more natural, and certainly simpler way to try to improve fertility.

Acupuncture can help reduce secondary causes of infertility

If you are dealing with infertility then you know that difficulty conceiving can be caused by a variety of factors stemming from the man’s or the woman’s side of the equation. Sometimes it is even the combination of two particular people and their unique chemistries which make conception challenging. For a third of all couples with infertility, the source of the problem is never identified. We do know that acupuncture is known to reduce stress and help in other physiological areas that may be influencing the infertility indirectly for either the man or the woman.

Acupuncture helps improve reproductive organ health

Acupuncture has been used to treat a variety of issues for women’s reproductive health and in this way can positively influence pregnancy outcome. If you have been diagnosed with a condition that is affecting fertility, or even if your fertility condition is "unexplained", acupuncture can help. Women who try acupuncture and practitioners of it report the following benefits:
• Regulating the menstruation, stabilizing hormone levels
• Facilitating production of more follicles and healthier follicles in the ovaries
• Increasing blood flow to the uterus, providing thicker endometrial lining
• Increasing blood flow to the ovaries
• Reducing stress, anxiety, tension and depression
• Strengthening the immune system
• Helping you absorb nutrients better and maintaining your weight
• Improving quality of sleep

Cheaper and easier place to start

Additionally, many acupuncturists take insurance which reduces the out of pocket costs. Since many western-style doctors now acknowledge the benefits of acupuncture, more are becoming familiar themselves with the practice. Look for an obstetrician or fertility specialist who also offers acupuncture either by performing it themselves or offering it through their practice.
